Study Halls

Open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 9:00pm the Rackham Building’s study halls are considered by many to be “the best place on campus to study.” These rooms are the most elegant spaces on campus dedicated to graduate student use. If you haven’t been lucky enough to experience these rooms yet, come over to the Rackham Building and check them out.

The Study Halls are located on the second floor of Rackham and include:

The East Lounge

Formerly a quiet study area, the East Lounge is now a place for graduate students to relax with friends, study in groups, enjoy a snack or beverage, or just hang out. This room will soon be equipped with new furniture making the space more flexible for social events. The Vending Room is located adjacent to the East Lounge and students may feel free to bring their own food or drinks. This room has wireless connectivity for laptops (information about how to gain wireless access can be found at: ).

The Reading Room

Located in the center of the second floor, the Reading Room is reserved for traditional, quiet study. No laptops, cell phones, or talking are allowed in this area. Overlooking Ingalls Mall and the Graduate Library, this room and its alcoves are furnished with large tables and overstuffed armchairs. The Reading Room is the room most mentioned by alumni when they ask about the Rackham Building. Food and drink are not allowed in the Reading Room to help maintain its historic elements.

The West Study Lounge

Like the East Lounge, this room is also equipped with comfortable furniture and wireless computer connectivity. The alcoves of this room serve as seminar rooms for Rackham Graduate Seminars. Like the Reading Room, food and drink are not allowed in this room in order to help preserve the space for generations of graduate students to come.

Reserve the South Alcove for Study Group Meetings

Graduate students in Rackham programs may book the 2nd floor West Study Hall South Alcove for study group meetings for the current semester, at least 3 days in advance. The alcove seats 18 people at a boardroom style table and there is no cost to Rackham graduate student study groups.
