Applicants are encouraged to register early to maximize the chances of scheduling preferred test dates and times.
Most graduate programs require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). A few graduate programs require the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). GRE, GMAT, and MCAT score minimums are established by each graduate program. Specific graduate program requirements and deadlines can be found in our Programs of Study section.
We advise you to use your legal name as stated on your passport or birth certificate when registering for the GRE, GMAT, or MCAT exams and when completing the online application. If your name does not match exactly, there will be a delay in matching your test scores to the application data
Evidence of adequate spoken and written English is required for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English must submit an official test score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the Examination for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (ECPE), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) scores. Official scores must be reported directly to the University of Michigan from Educational Testing Services. University of Michigan’s ETS institutional code is 1839. Individual department code numbers are not necessary. As long as the institutional code of 1839 is selected, the score will be electronically delivered to the University of Michigan.
