Centennial Awards: Intensifying the Impact of Graduate Students in the World

Advanced degrees carry with them an implicit commitment to make a difference in the world: to discover fresh approaches to entrenched problems, to enlarge the knowledge base, to enhance our understanding of human thought and expression. Our alumni continue to fulfill this commitment by applying their talent and training to an array of global endeavors.

When Michigan graduate students embark on a path to a master’s or doctoral degree, they dedicate themselves to a life of intellectual rigor and creative challenge. During their time at U-M, they prepare for the international dimensions of their careers by mastering the advanced technologies, communication resources, and institutional practices that drive collaboration. In their research and practice, they tackle interdisciplinary projects and pursue boundary-breaking innovations. Ultimately, they take their place as leaders in research, teaching, the arts, and professional fields.

Today, pursuing a graduate degree is a costly endeavor—particularly when international research projects are involved, as they often are. Only with the help of donors such as you can we hope to ensure that our students will have the opportunity to fully engage in their training.

To mark its century of support for Michigan’s graduate students, the Graduate School will establish 100 Centennial Awards to be distributed in 2012. These awards are intended to connect donors with scholarly endeavors that are significant and particularly meaningful to them.

The Rackham Graduate School is the largest source of graduate student financial aid. Nearly two-thirds of our budget provides fellowships and grants for over 7,000 students. These funds allow faculty to recruit and support a dynamic, diverse, and highly committed community of young scholars and researchers.
