Application Fee and Waivers

Application Fee

The application fee is due when you submit your application. The fee is non-refundable and subject to change. If you pay the application fee and you are later approved to receive a fee waiver, the fee will not be refunded.

  • United States citizens and those with permanent resident visa status, $75
  • Non-U.S. citizens, $90
  • Current Rackham student (regardless of citizenship) $10

Fee Waivers Administered by Rackham Graduate School

In certain circumstances, you may be eligible for an application fee waiver administered by Rackham.

  • To qualify, the program to which you are applying must be a Rackham graduate program. To verify that your program of interest is a Rackham program, check the Programs of Study (please review this listing of Rackham graduate programs that administer their own application fee waivers).
  • Review our list of fee waiver types administered by Rackham, along with their criteria. If you do not qualify for a fee waiver, you will be required to pay the application fee at the time you submit your application.
  • If eligible, only one fee waiver per applicant will be issued by the Rackham Graduate School.
  • Falsification of information to obtain a fee waiver may result in the withdrawal of the application or in the revocation of admission, financial award, or registration.

American Indian and Alaskan Native

Requirements for Eligibility

  1. You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  2. Your race must be American Indian or Alaskan Native.

Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA) – Summer Research Opportunity Program

Requirements for Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Participation in a Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) at a Big Ten Academic Alliance University AND undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Instructions

  1. Complete the FreeApp request form through the Big Ten Academic Alliance.
  2. Respond to the questions required in the Fee Waiver section of the ApplyWeb application.

Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT)

Requirements for Eligibility

  • Requires pre-approval from IRT.
  • Contact IRT at 978.749.4116 or [email protected] if you have a question.

Instructions

  1. Request an official verification document or letter from IRT before you are ready to submit your application.
  2. Upload the official verification document (proof of membership) on the Additional Essay & Information page (page 10) of the ApplyWeb application. Do not mail, fax, or email the proof of eligibility to the Rackham Graduate School.

Michigan Humanities Emerging Research Scholars (MICHHERS)

Requirements for Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Participation in the MICHHERS program.

National Organization Affiliation Fee Waiver

Requirements for Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • You must be a member of one of the following organizations:
    • Current Volunteer with Vista/Peace Corps or AmeriCorps
    • Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS)
    • Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT)
    • Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP)
    • Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC)
    • Post-Baccalaureate Research and Education Program (PREP)
    • Public Policy and International Affairs Junior Institute (PPIA)
    • Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE)
    • Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair)

Instructions

  1. Request an official verification document or letter from the organization before you are ready to submit your application.
  2. Upload the official verification document (proof of membership) on the Additional Essay & Information page (page 10) of the ApplyWeb application. Do not mail, fax, or email the proof of eligibility to the Rackham Graduate School.

Need Based Fee Waivers

Enrolled Undergraduate Senior or Graduate Student Currently Receiving Federal Financial Aid from a U.S. College or University

Requirements for Eligibility

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • An enrolled/current undergraduate college senior or graduate student currently receiving financial aid from an institution in the United States, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.
  • Estimated family contribution (EFC) listed on the Student Aid Report (SAR) is less than $1,500. The Student Aid Report is provided after the FASFA is submitted.

Instructions

Upload a copy your Student Aid Report (SAR) page one only with the submission of this application on the Additional Essay & Information page (page 10) of the ApplyWeb application.

  • Do not mail, fax, or email the proof of eligibility to the Rackham Graduate School.
  • The Student Aid Report can be obtained by using the FSA ID number and choosing Student Aid Report (SAR).

Undocumented or DACAmented Students

Requirements for Eligibility

Applicant has Undocumented or DACAmented immigrant status.

Fee Waivers Administered by a University of Michigan Graduate Program, School, or College

This list does not include every program, school, or college that offers application fee waivers. To be eligible for Graduate Program Fee Waivers you must receive pre-approval and a fee waiver code from the graduate program, school, or college directly.

Send questions about graduate program fee waivers to the graduate program, school, or college that administers the fee waiver.

  • Master’s Bridge Program Waivers (requires pre-approval from the program)
  • Master of Urban and Regional Planning M.U.R.P. – Vista/Peace Corps/AmeriCorps alumni; Teach for America volunteers and alumni; active duty U.S. military and U.S. military veterans – U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only.
  • Public Policy M.P.P. or M.P.A. – Teach for America and Former Volunteer (Vista/Peace Corps/AmeriCorps) – U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only.
  • School of Kinesiology application fee waivers (for applicants applying to the School of Kinesiology only) – [email protected]
