Announcement

Rackham Graduate School will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday from 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 25 to 8:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 29.

Alumni Spotlight: Juan Jaen

“I wonder if I could go to school here.” That was Juan Jaen’s thought as he walked past the University of Michigan’s old chemistry building while visiting from his home city of Madrid (Spain). Anita, his girlfriend at the time, now his wife, replied, “Well, go inside and ask.” So he did. Even though he hadn’t yet finished his undergraduate degree in organic chemistry, that was Juan’s first step towards becoming a Rackham graduate student.

Alumni Spotlight: Jeff Hansen

Where science went, so did Jeff Hansen, from a college campus to the newsroom and back again. With an undergraduate degree in Economics, a Ph.D. in Microbiology, and a career in journalism, his career path might seem nontraditional, but to him, it makes perfect sense.

Karl C.K. Ma Makes $2.5 Million Gift to the Rackham Graduate School

Gift Will Support Graduate Students from Asia in Public Service Fields

Ann Arbor, MI | September 12, 2017

Karl C.K. Ma has made a gift to the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies in the amount of $2.5 million. Of that sum, $2 million will be used to establish the Karl C.K. Ma Endowed Graduate Scholarship Fund, and the remaining $500,000 will be used to establish an expendable fund. The purpose of Ma’s gift is to provide need-based support to graduate students from Asia who wish to pursue careers in public service, particularly those in the Schools of Social Work, Education, and Nursing. Ma also hopes his gift will support students whose research or primary scholarly focus is on the study and preservation of Asian cultures, including Asian regional studies, music, art, language, and literature.
