PLAN, Manage Your Professional Development as a Graduate Student
A Health and Wellness Initiative Activity
Do you find yourself plagued by feelings of doubt and constantly asking yourself the question "how did I get here and when will they find out I don't belong?" You are definitely not alone. Many graduate students wonder whether they really belong in graduate school, especially during their first year. Confronting the Imposter Syndrome will enable you to confront the root of many of the other obstacles you may also be facing such as: procrastination, worry, anxiety, lack of confidence, and stifled performance. Join us in this roundtable discussion where we will address this syndrome and develop concrete strategies for overcoming its effects.

Wednesday, October 15, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm, Assembly Hall, 4th floor, Rackham Building
Presenter: Rena Seltzer, LMSW, coaches professors and other academics to reach their writing and publishing goals.
Writing a dissertation presents challenges in including unstructured time, deadlines that are non-existent or years in the future, and a project that is vitally important to the author, but may not be important to anyone else. The purpose of this workshop is to develop skills that will carry graduate students through the dissertation process and into successful careers as academic writers.
This workshop will help participants to:
1. Create a timeline that is specific rather than vague, with clear
goals and deadlines.
2. Understand the benefits of regular, moderate writing, rather than
binge writing.
3. Identify and employ structures that support productive writing.
4. Reframe the process from greater effectiveness and enjoyment.
The workshop will begin promptly at 4:30 pm. Please bring your calendar/planner to the workshop. This workshop is co-sponsored by Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).
Pre-registration is required at https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/Events/wssel.php

Nobel Peace Prize winner and South African cleric Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be awarded the eighteenth University of Michigan Wallenberg Medal by U-M president Mary Sue Coleman on Wednesday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Hill Auditorium. After the medal presentation, Archbishop Tutu will give the Wallenberg Lecture.
The first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, Tutu rose to international fame during the 1980s as a deeply committed advocate of nonviolent resistance to apartheid. Today Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, is widely regarded as South Africa's moral conscience. He continues to speak out passionately and courageously around the world on behalf of human rights. "When we look around us at some of the conflict areas of the world," says Tutu, "it becomes increasingly clear that there is not much of a future for them without forgiveness, without reconciliation."
This event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7pm; we recommend that you arrive early as we expect a large crowd. There will be an overflow room at the Modern Languages Building nearby for those who are unable to get into the auditorium.
The Wallenberg Endowment is sponsoring several activities in conjunction with the lecture. For more information, please visit the website at http://www.wallenberg.umich.edu.
