For Prospective Applicants

Future Grad Student Registration

We encourage you to let us know of your interests. Please take just a moment to register, and remember to identify the appropriate department link under "Program of Study." This information will be used in your future communications with the University.

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) (for undergraduate students)

An intensive eight-week research program with graduate-level faculty that combines graduate school preparation, research, presentation skills, and social preparedness. This program is very competitive with limited space availability. Note: University of Michigan students are not eligible. The program runs from early June through early August.

For Incoming and Current Students

Workshops for enrolled students

We offer a series of workshops to support students’ academic success. Workshop topics will include areas such as: academic integrity, how to do a literature review, how to work well with your advisor and committee, practical strategies for writing a thesis or dissertation, grant and proposal writing, and the academic job search.

Rackham Summer Institute (incoming doctoral students, by invitation only)

The Rackham Summer Institute is available only to newly admitted recipients of Rackham Merit Fellowships (RMF), Rackham Engineering Awards (REA), Rackham Science Awards (RSA), and Rackham Merit Fellowship students in Education, Psychology, and in the Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS), who are pursuing a Ph.D. The Summer Institute (SI) includes courses relating to participants’ specific research interests, seminars addressing common issues and concerns, and other activities to provide a more fluid transition into graduate student life. Past participants have found that the SI helps to clarify expectations and build a professional and social network that help provide a firmer grounding for the challenges of graduate school.

Workshops for Rackham Merit Fellows

We provide an on-going series of workshops and gatherings for Rackham Merit Fellows. These activities will enable students to enhance their academic pursuits and continue the development of professional and social networks beyond their academic programs. Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society

The Bouchet Society was initiated by Yale and Howard Universities to recognize outstanding scholarly achievement and to promote diversity and excellence in doctoral education and the professoriate. It was named for the first African-American Doctoral Recipient in the United States (Physics, Yale University, 1876). The Bouchet Society provides a network of support and examples of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy for students and faculty who have been traditionally underrepresented in academia.
