Rackham Summer Institute Program Highlights
Rackham SI fellows receive advanced academic preparation in one of the following areas:
- Humanities Research Methodology
- Laboratory Research and Research Ethics
- Language Study
- Mathematics
- Social Science Research Methodology
Each is designed to enhance the academic experience and enrich the fellow's specific disciplinary interests. In addition, fellows attend weekly seminars that address issues common to all graduate students.
Rackham SI fellows have an excellent opportunity to build networks within departments, across disciplines, and throughout the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor community by participating in a variety of formal and informal events during the program.
The Rackham Graduate School provides tuition or program fees for courses taken during the SI. The Graduate School also provides a $6,000 summer stipend and medical and dental insurance for all fellows. This stipend is separate from and in addition to the fellowship stipend distributed from September through April. SI fellows are responsible for their own housing, transportation costs, and books and supplies for any courses during the Institute.
Rackham SI fellows must participate in the entire length of the program. Partial participation is not an option. Fellows must attend all scheduled events in their entirety. Failure to do so will result in a reduction of the stipend.
Invitations to participate in the Rackham SI will be sent directly to eligible students receiving merit fellowship awards beginning in late February. Late fellowships awarded by departments will delay notification of SI eligibility. Participation in the SI is not a competitive application process, but students must register online no later than April 22, 2013. Students are guaranteed a space, if their registration is completed by the deadline. The registration process has multiple parts, so early registration is encouraged.
