Graduate Student Community
The Rackham Graduate School takes great pride in the diversity of its community and values the participation of students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; students who are underrepresented by gender in their field; students with disabilities; students from socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. The excellence and diversity of our community is recognized in the National Science Foundation’s most recent Survey of Earned Doctorates, which identifies Michigan as the only university in the nation in the top ten for the most doctorates awarded for every specified minority group. For Asian Americans, we ranked 6th. For African-Americans, we ranked 3rd. For Hispanics, we ranked 7th. And for American Indians, we were tied for 10th. We also ranked 7th for students from multi-race backgrounds. Rackham students are engaged across the University in support and advocacy for students from traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education.
If and when things do go wrong, there are resources for addressing them. See What You Should Do in Instances of Discrimination and Harassment: A Guide for Rackham Graduate Students for advice and information about policies and resources to address discrimination and harassment at the University.
International graduate students enrich the diverse and cosmopolitan character of the University. See information and resources for international students. For information, contact Rackham’s office of Graduate Student Affairs, (734) 647-7548.
