Making a Thesis or Dissertation Support Group Work for You

Are you feeling isolated? Experiencing writer's block? Discouraged about not making enough progress on your thesis or dissertation? Becoming part of a thesis or dissertation support group might be a key to helping you turn things around. This document is based on advice found in several books about the graduate school experience as well the experiences of a focus group of Rackham students who have been in such groups. It gives advice about getting started and provides guidelines that, if followed, will help the group to succeed. Helpful references are also included.

Enhancing the Academic Environment for Doctoral Students (PDF)

The Executive Board of the Graduate School offers these policies and guidelines to help define the expectations of students and the responsibilities of faculty for doctoral education. They are likely to contribute to program quality, improve student morale, limit attrition, and shorten the time it takes to complete the degree.

Office of Academic Records and Dissertations

OARD administers and is available to assist graduate students with the thesis composition process. Available from their site are printable forms, deadline information, and other resources.

Sweetland Writing Center Services for Graduate Students

The Sweetland Writing Center offers free, individual writing conferences for graduate students who are working on course papers, conference presentations,dissertations, grant proposals, resumes, and other writing for academic or employment purposes.

English Language Institute

The Collaborative Technologies Lab

The Collaborative Technologies Lab (CTL) supports the incorporation of media-rich content into teaching, research, and collaborative activities at the UM. The CTL is staffed by consultants trained in video production, web development, graphic design, and educational technology. Support for U-M CourseTools, SiteMaker, and WorkTools is also available.

Tech Transfer

Technology Transfer transfers intellectual property (patents, inventions, software, and other copyrightable works) created by University of Michigan researchers and employees for use bythe general public. This is accomplished by licensing technologies to industry and start-ups, and licensing software to end-users.
