Dear Students,

The spring issue of GradConnect is now available at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/student_life/advice_support/health_wellness/gradconnect/.

GradConnect is a newsletter dedicated to connecting you to resources on campus to help you both personally and professionally.

The 36th annual Dexter-Ann Arbor Run will take place on May 31, 2009. Whether you are a regular runner or walker or just getting started, you can “Challenge Yourself for Charity” at this wonderful community event. The Rackham Graduate School will pledge $15 of the registration fee for graduate student participants. Visit http://www.dexterannarborrun.com/ to register for the “Rackham Graduate School Team.” The “Rackham Code” required for this discount is your UMID number. If you have any questions, please contact .

More than 1,400 graduate students participated in the Active U 2009 physical activity challenge that wrapped up on April 14. The official challenge has concluded, but the activity tracker and health information will continue to be available on the Michigan Healthy Community website.

I wish all of you a safe, happy, and successful summer. For those of you graduating this semester, congratulations and best wishes for the next stage of your career!

Sincerely,

December 2008

Dear Students,

The most recent issue of GradConnect is now available at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/student_life/advice_support/health_wellness/gradconnect/. This newsletter provides information about activities and services on campus to help you both personally and professionally.

A number of programs on campus can help you to keep active in the winter months. One campus-wide program is Active U, a ten-week physical activity challenge to promote physical activity among the U-M community. Participants in the program are offered free limited access to select U-M rec centers, and chances to win prizes and money for your favorite charity. Last year 1,400 graduate students participated in the program, and I hope that even more students will join this year. The program is open to faculty, staff, graduate students, and retirees. You can participate as an individual or as a part of a team. Active U 2009 runs from February 3 to April 14, 2009 and registration begins December 16, 2008. Please visit http://www.hr.umich.edu/mhealthy/programs/activity/activeu/index.html.

In the winter semester, the Rackham Graduate School will offer self-defense classes, yoga classes, and more chances to try out a variety of physical fitness activities. Space is limited in these classes, so look for announcements with details.

A student advisory board has been hard at work this semester developing new ideas for the Health and Wellness Initiative. If you are interested in learning more about the board’s current projects or would like to join the board next semester, please contact .

Wishing you a successful conclusion to the semester and peace and joy during the holiday season!

Sincerely,

Janet A. Weiss

October 2008

Dear Students,

I'm writing to tell you about Rackham's Health and Wellness Initiative. The Initiative seeks to make you aware of campus resources to support your health and well-being while you are in graduate school and throughout your career.

Mental health plays a critical role in academic and personal success. You have probably received a “got stress?” brochure, which describes support and counseling resources available to students on campus. If you didn't get one, the brochure and accompanying map are available at the following URLs:
http://www.rackham.umich.edu/downloads/studentlife/stress.pdf
http://www.rackham.umich.edu/downloads/publications/mhmap.pdf

The Initiative also focuses on physical health, specifically on nutrition, physical activity, and healthy behaviors. We are offering drop-in fitness classes, tobacco cessation sessions, self-defense classes, and breakfast events. Information about these activities is featured on Rackham's event calendar, available at http://www.rackham.umich.edu/calendar/. The events calendar also includes Rackham workshops and social events throughout the year. I recommend that you bookmark this site to keep up with activities available to you.

Four times a year we send you GradConnect, a newsletter to connect you to resources for mental health, physical health, academic and career issues, and other health-related information. The October 2008 edition of GradConnect and back issues are available on Rackham's website by visiting the following link http://www.rackham.umich.edu/student_life/advice_support/health_wellness/gradconnect/. I hope that you have a moment to review the newsletters; you may be surprised to learn how much is available to you on our campus.

We continue to work closely with graduate and professional school students to orient the programming for the Health and Wellness Initiative to the needs and interests expressed by students themselves. Information will be forthcoming about applying to serve on the student advisory board for the Initiative.

To learn more about the Health and Wellness Initiative, please visit http://www.rackham.umich.edu/student_life/advice_support/health_wellness/

I wish you the best of luck this academic year!

Sincerely,

Janet A. Weiss
