The Center for the Education of Women

Contents

The Center for the Education of Women (CEW) assists students with completing their education, making career decisions, developing professionally, and balancing school with other family and life responsibilities. In addition, CEW offers scholarships for returning women students at the University of Michigan and emergency grants for U-M graduate students and non-traditional undergraduates. CEW also serves as an advocate on behalf of campus women.

On this page you will find resources on:

CEW Scholarships

Female students that attend any of the University of Michigan campuses may be eligible for the CEW scholarships. Every year, in the fall, an application is posted on the CEW website. The Scholarship Program has been available to students since 1970. Scholarships are meant to honor the academic performance and potential of women.

CEW Scholarship applicants should be aware of the eligibility requirements.

  1. Students must be attending the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn campuses) during the academic year they are applying for funds.
  2. Students must have had a break in their education after high school of at least 4 years in a row or 50 months not in a row - not counting interruptions of less than 8 months.
  3. Students who have already received a CEW Scholarship are not eligible again.

CEW Student Research Grants

The Center for the Education of Women also offers Student Research Grants of up to $1,000 to fund research, including scholarly and creative activities, on topics related to CEW's mission. Most of these awards are given to University of Michigan - Ann Arbor graduate students, but some undergraduate students have received awards as well. Grants are given to students on an ongoing basis.

Research topics must have a gender focus and may emphasize the following characteristics: leadership, education and careers, growth and development, health and well-being, political and social status.

Research Grants are not used to pay for conference fees or presentations, service learning trips, study abroad programs, or other degree requirements that are not research based.

Visit the CEW website for information on the application process.

CEW Emergency Funds

If female students find themselves in extraordinary financial hardship while in school, the CEW does offer case by case emergency funds. These funds are meant for students who have especially unique financial circumstances or who have experienced a change in their life circumstances that requires additional, immediate money.

Students that are in need of CEW Emergency Funds should call the Center for the Education of Women and set-up a counseling appointment to talk to a professional about re-reviewing their financial aid budget and other application requirements. To make an appointment call (734) 764-6360.

Other CEW Programs

Most of the Center for the Education of Women programs are free and open to anyone who would like to attend. Topics range from the job-search process, to leadership and career development, financial planning, and work-life balance. Over 45 programs are offered annually on campus for students and the public.

CEW's free career and educational counseling is available to students, faculty, staff, and community members - both men and women are welcome. CEW offers counseling for a range of issues, from applying to graduate school, balancing studies/work/family, to career decision-making, to researching financial aid/scholarship options. CEW also has a public library which contains research material about education, employment and careers, leadership and women's growth and development.
