Professional Workshops

Seven concurrent workshops are offered. Each will be offered twice, one at 10:00 am and the other at 11:15 am. A 15 minute refreshment break is scheduled between the two sessions. SROP scholars are asked to identify their top three choices. Due to limited seating, scholars will be assigned to two workshops. Every effort will be made to schedule in accordance with the scholars’ priorities.

Expanding Your Reach: Networking and Mentoring for the 21st Century

Did you realize that right now you are developing academic and personal networks? This workshop will discuss how to strategically connect while staying true to your personal and professional identity. Strategies for dealing with difficult colleagues, finding faculty mentors and creating a supportive network will also be discussed.

The Rules of the Game: Professional Responsibilities in the Research Community

The protocols and practices of research may be discipline specific, but a commitment to the values shared by those in the research community is fundamental to the trust others must have in the quality and integrity of your work. This workshop will provide an introduction to these professional responsibilities.

Still Lifting, Still Climbing: Women of Color in Graduate School

This workshop, featuring a panel of faculty, will focus on how to manage the myriad of challenges that women of color face in the graduate school years due to intersecting identities and demands.

This Is Your Time: Are You Prepared?

This workshop will help you evaluate your preparation for graduate school, understand the realities of the transition to the graduate student experience and provide strategies to ensure that your first year prepares you for continued success.

Graduate school is an expensive undertaking, but you don’t want to be blind-sided by what seems like a good offer. Learn how to read the fine print of offers, evaluate multiple offers and seek out additional funding. Learn more about the differences among types of financial support.

Being the first one in your family to graduate from college has some unique challenges. This panel discussion will include insight for first-generation students about navigating the sometimes conflicting academic world and world back home.
