PLAN, Manage Your Professional Development as a Graduate Student
If you've never planned or attended an event in Rackham, you'll find all sorts of useful information to help you decide if our Facilities will serve your needs. If you are familiar with the facilities, but just have a question about a certain space, available equipment, capacity, room dimensions, etc. you can probably find the answer to your question on these pages as well. If you need any information beyond what's listed, send an e-mail to or give us a call at (734) 764-8572.
The Rackham Amphitheatre, located on the fourth floor of the Rackham Building, has a full projection booth, 2 permanent projection screens (one large enough for side by side projecting), a portable lectern which may be placed in 3 different locations, and a presentation area which can accommodate panels with up to 10 members. The room is steeply graded for maximum viewing and the sightlines are excellent from anywhere in the room. The Amphitheatre is used primarily for major conferences and guest lecturers; it is an excellent space for panel discussions as well.

The Rackham Assembly Hall, located across the hall from the Amphitheatre, is used primarily for receptions and meals as well as mid-sized lectures and workshops. This room has an alcove at either end that can be closed off to make the room smaller or to create break-out rooms. With access to the fourth floor terrace, the Assembly Hall has the kind of atmosphere most groups are seeking for formal dinners for donors, alumni, and out-of-town guests.

Many groups find that the entire fourth floor (Amphitheatre, Assembly Hall, East and West Conferences Rooms) perfectly fits their facilities needs. With the added space created by dividing off the Assembly Hall Alcoves, the Fourth Floor can accommodate one large meeting room (the Amphitheatre) with up to 5 breakout rooms.

The Main Lobby of the Rackham Building (located just inside the Washington Street entrance) is the perfect location for receptions and refreshments for events held in the Auditorium. For most receptions, groups utilize the two large pedestal tables located in this area (additional folding tables can be added if necessary). The lobby is also the ideal location to use as a registration area for conferences being held in the Auditorium.
The Lobby cannot be reserved for receptions unless the Auditorium is also booked (see Auditorium). Groups using the fourth floor can setup registration tables in the Lobby as long as it is not reserved for a reception by a group using the Auditorium. If a group using the Auditorium wishes to reserve the Lobby for a reception, it must be booked separately.

The Rackham Auditorium is one of campus’ most beautiful facilities. Used for lectures, conferences, recitals, commencement and awards ceremonies, the Auditorium seats approximately 1,100 people.
For information on the Rackham Auditorium, please contact the University Productions office at (734) 647-3327.
MSA-registered student groups will not be charged a room usage fee. Student groups will be required to pay a refundable $100 deposit for each room that is booked. The deposit is due when the contract is signed. The deposit may be retained by Rackham if the room (or it contents) has been damaged or needs additional cleaning, or if the reservation is not cancelled by the cancellation deadline (see below).
If a student organization fails to cancel a room reservation at least 14 days prior to the scheduled event (45 days for the Amphitheatre and/or Assembly Hall), the group will forfeit their deposit.
