Effective Fall 2010, students who are in good academic standing who wish to pursue study that is relevant to the their University of Michigan Ph.D. at another education institution may apply for Extramural Study status. The course or program of study must be for a period that overlaps substantially (minimum seven weeks) with a University of Michigan fall or winter term. Students must seek authorization in advance for Extramural Study status, providing documentation regarding course or program details as well as documentation of enrollment. Extramural Study enables students approved for this status to remain active in their Ph.D. program.
IMPORTANT: If you are a student with a U-M issued F-1 or J-1 visa, please contact an advisor at the International Center to determine whether you can apply for Extramural Study status.
Extramural Study Coursework and Your U-M Transcript
Extramural study course work does not appear on the University of Michigan transcript.
Applying for Extramural Study Status
To apply for Extramural Study status, students must:
- Complete and submit the application
- Upload supporting documents (course or program information and proof of registration or payment of tuition/fees) in PDF format
The student’s graduate chair or program director must approve the course of study as directly relevant to the student's ability to complete the Ph.D.
