Rackham Professional Development Leader (RPDL) Program

About the Program

This year, Rackham’s Professional and Academic Development team is recruiting Rackham Professional Development Leaders (RPDLs) to serve from Fall 2017 to Winter 2018. This new Rackham program will identify and train a core of graduate students from across the university to serve as Rackham graduate student professional development leaders within departments. RPDLs will be professional development allies that will liaise between Rackham and graduate departments and programs in a variety of ways, including facilitating workshops and coordinating activities and resources related to professional development with the support of Rackham. We will identify leaders for different departments to help Rackham connect to the broader campus community and raise awareness about resources and opportunities for graduate student professional development.

RPDL Commitments

  • Plan one departmental and/or school program (e.g., workshop, panel, dialogue, etc.) of their choosing related to professional development (career exploration, job search, internships, skill development, preparing future faculty, DE&I, etc.) over the course of the 2017-18 academic year.
  • Support at least 3 Rackham programs per semester. Examples include facilitation of community conversations, facilitation of alumni panels, attendance and presentation at major recruitment events (e.g., MICHHERS, SROP student panels), facilitation of table discussion at Rackham professional development events and/or Rackham public forums, facilitation of affinity group (first generation, RMF, MSI community) meetings, assistance at Rackham Fall Welcome and/or alumni networking events, etc.
  • Attend RPDL-related meetings and trainings (approximately bimonthly) throughout the academic year.

Rackham Commitments

  • RPDLs will receive an annual stipend of $2,000
  • RPDL program coordinators will receive annual stipends of $3,000
  • Up to $500 for each RPDL member for materials and hosting for two departmental and/or school programs

Call for Applications

We seek to create a diverse RPDL cohort, with 20 graduate students from across the university, including 2 RPDL student coordinators who will play a leadership role in the group. We will seek representation from a diverse range of departments.

Application Guidelines

RPDL applicants should submit the following materials to lnschram@umich.edu:

  1. A cover letter explaining your past experiences and qualifications for the position, as well as how the position fits in your long-term professional goals. Please share any professional development leadership experiences on campus and/or nationally. If you would like to be considered for the RPDL program coordinator role, please share any additional relevant experience that would qualify you to support coordination of the group. Please note all CRLT training workshops you have attended.
  2. A C.V./resume.
  3. At least one letter of recommendation from a faculty member or a university staff member who can speak to your leadership in the area of professional development.

The Application Deadline is May 30, 2017.

International Student Eligibility

International students with a 0.50 appointment (20 hours per week) are not eligible for this program due to visa regulations. International students with less than 0.50 appointments are eligible to apply, but must adjust RPDL hours to ensure that they do not exceed the 20 hour per week limit.
