PLAN, Manage Your Professional Development as a Graduate Student

Each summer, Rackham hosts a Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) which offers outstanding undergraduates who are underrepresented in their fields of study the opportunity to conduct intensive research across a variety of disciplines. The goal of this program is to prepare students for advanced studies in a graduate degree program and to give them the skills and resources they need to develop a keen insight into the research process. SROP offers first-hand exposure to the graduate school experience through faculty-mentor guided research, a weekly seminar series, and many other activities that help students develop networks they need to be successful graduate students. Participants in SROP work with faculty on an individual basis or as part of a research team which may also include graduate students, research scientists, and other SROP students.
Each year, SROP students gather for a regional conference at one of the universities from the consortium of institutions who take part in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC). This year, the University of Michigan had the opportunity to host nearly 450 students for an exceptional conference. Over 100 graduate student volunteers enthusiastically represented the University at this year's conference which brought together students from over 115 disciplines of study. Comments from conference participants were overwhelmingly positive, and several students expressed an interest in attending U-M for graduate studies.
