The View from Here: Depression on College Campuses is a thirty-minute documentary designed to promote awareness that depression is a common health issue taking many forms. It features students and faculty at the University of Michigan from differing identity groups, ages and degree programs who relate the stories of their experiences with depression.
They have a wide range of symptoms and responses: there is no typical depressed person. There is a multiplicity of perspectives in another sense. Some of the speakers have overcome the challenges of depression and some have yet to realize this. The documentary is encouraging yet realistic. The emphasis is on the need to overcome stigma or shame and turn to the many resources that are available.
The View from Here was produced by staff at the Rackham Graduate School, with advice and encouragement from John F. Greden, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Executive Director of the University of Michigan Depression Center.
