Background Information

Several years ago, the Rackham School of Graduate Studies worked with the Lambda Graduate Association, the U-M Lesbian Gay Bisexual Faculty Alliance, and the Office of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender Affairs on a series of forums exploring the experiences and needs of our LGBT graduate and professional students.

At these discussions, the students expressed their desire to receive professional advice and support from LGBT faculty. Yet they felt greatly limited by the fact that they often do not know which faculty are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered and furthermore, which LGBT faculty are willing to talk about issues of sexual orientation in the academy. On the other hand, LGBT faculty expressed their discomfort in initiating a conversation with students on such topics because of their uncertainty about whether a particular student wants to discuss such concerns.

It was therefore suggested that professional communication between LGBT students and faculty would be greatly facilitated if students had a list of LGBT faculty willing to talk about the interface between sexual orientation and the academic world. It is our hope that this directory will serve this function, and that as a result, the quality of our LGBT graduate and professional students’ experiences will be enhanced.
