Tips for Planning Travel Arrangements for F1 or J1 Visa Holders

  • Make your travel arrangements after you have been informed of the reporting date. The reporting date will appear on the immigration document. In addition, the reporting date will display in Wolverine Access. The reporting date will not be changed to accommodate personal reasons or plane reservations
  • The reporting date on your immigration document is determined by the federal immigration regulations and other considerations including, but not limited to:
    • University and departmental orientations
    • Workshops
    • The mandatory SEVIS check in prior to the beginning of classes
  • We encourage you to set up an eShip account for mailing your immigration document. This will guarantee timely delivery of the immigration document
    • Visit the eShip Global website
    • Click on the Sign Up button under the Students Section
    • You must fill in the Reference/Comment field with the name of the documents you are requesting
  • We strongly recommend that you do not make a visa appointment until you receive the immigration document
  • You are allowed to enter the U.S. no earlier than 30 days prior to the reporting date on the immigration document. Immigration regulations do not allow for earlier arrival for any reason
  • Entry into the U.S. may be prohibited at the port of entry after the reporting date indicated on your immigration document
  • Complete the International Center’s Visa Assistance form if you experience a delay in receiving your visa
