D.M.A. in Music Composition
Rackham International Research Award
Lembit Beecher is a composer, conductor and pianist who is particularly interested in the way people tell stories, through songs, sounds, gestures and words. His dissertation, titled “And Then I Remember,” is a 50-minute long documentary oratorio based on the World War II stories of his grandmother. The piece is woven together from recorded interviews, spoken and sung text, instrumental music and video, creating an unusual form of narrative that attempts to capture the strange and subtle ways in which people remember and retell intense emotional experiences. It will premiere on March 27th and 28th at 8 pm in the Video Studio of the University of Michigan Duderstadt Center. Lembit plans to graduate in the spring of 2009.
