Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) International Ph.D. Student Research Fellowship
HHMI’s three-year fellowship program supports outstanding international Ph.D. students studying in the United States who are ineligible for fellowships or training grants through U.S. federal agencies.
Eligibility
This fellowship program is open to international students, enrolled full-time in the University of Michigan, who are in years three, four, and five of a Ph.D. program (nominated in year two or three). Eligible fields include life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science and psychology. A student does not need to be working with an HHMI Investigator to be eligible.
Deadline
November 4, 2011; we anticipate making decisions by November 22, 2011 for the University of Michigan’s ten institutional nominations.
Award Description
HHMI expects to fund up to 40 fellowships from several host institutions. Each fellow will receive an annual stipend of $30,000, plus an educational allowance for three years. The nominating program is expected to contribute 50% of the shortfall between the educational allowance and actual costs of tuition and benefits.
Nomination Criteria
Eligible students:- are studying in the life and health sciences, physical sciences, biomedical engineering, computer science or psychology;
- have demonstrated exceptional talent for research;
- are in the second (or third) year of doctoral study;
- have entered a laboratory in which they will conduct their dissertation research, and
- are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

Nomination Procedure
Students must be nominated by their program. Eligible graduate programs on the Ann Arbor campus may nominate up to three students each year. Please contact your program for their nomination procedures.
To nominate a student for this award, graduate programs must complete the nomination form and submit the following:
- a one-page statement from the nominee describing his/her research, future goals and timetable for completion
- the nominee’s current curriculum vitae (c.v.);
- a letter of no more than two pages from the nominee’s faculty advisor or graduate chair, affirming that the nominee will do the dissertation in the advisor’s laboratory and confirming the graduate program’s intent to contribute 50% of the shortfall between the HHMI educational allowance and actual costs of tuition and benefits.
