Purpose

The Faculty Fellowship Enhancement Fund has been established jointly by the Vice President for Research and the Dean of the Graduate School, with the support of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The first objective of the fund is to recognize, with some modest additional support, those faculty and primary research staff who have been awarded certain distinguished fellowships and residencies. The second objective is to encourage our faculty and research staff to apply in greater numbers for these prestigious fellowships.

Eligibility

To be eligible, the honoree must hold an appointment at the University as continuing instructional faculty, primary research staff, librarian, or curator. Receipt of the following fellowships and residencies will qualify faculty members for this support; other fellowships or residencies with a comparably high standard distinction and competitiveness will be considered on a case by case basis:

  • J. Paul Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship
  • J. S. Guggenheim Fellowship
  • Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities at the American Academy in Rome
  • American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship
  • Fulbright Awards for Advanced Research
  • National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship
  • National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship
  • Rockefeller Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities
  • Social Science Research Council Postdoctoral Grants for Research in Area Studies
  • American Council of Learned Societies Ph.D. Recent Recipients Program
  • Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung Fellowship
  • Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton)
  • Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (Palo Alto)
  • National Humanities Center (Research Triangle Park)
  • Center for the Advanced Study of the Visual Arts (National Gallery, Washington, D.C.)
  • National Research Council/Ford Foundation Fellowships for Minority Scholars & Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.)
  • School of American Research Resident Scholar Program
  • National Academy of Education Spencer Fellowships

An award consists of $3,000 for research and other creative activity. It may be used for any expense related to the recipient’s scholarly or creative endeavor, including travel, books, equipment, photocopies of archival other material, research assistance, and the like. Salary support of the honoree is permitted under the terms of this fund. There are two options for administering the award, which is expendable over a three-year period from notification. We can either establish an individual account or place the funds in a departmental or other University account that is already available to the honoree. It will be the responsibility of the honoree and the department to administer the account in accordance with the Standard Practice Guide.

Application Instructions

To obtain the award, send a brief letter, enclosing a copy of the fellowship award letter, to Pat McCune at 1120 Rackham, 1070. A copy of the letter should be sent to the appropriate department chair or dean.
