Purpose

Support funds are available for the following three types of purposes:

1. Improve the Climate, Character, and Quality of Graduate Education

Funds to improve the climate, character, and quality of graduate education, focusing largely on students.

  • Events for graduate students (e.g., visiting speakers, welcoming events)
  • Events sponsored by graduate student groups/associations
  • Projects to assist in the establishment of informal discussion groups, or formal discussion groups across disciplines or at the edges of disciplines.
  • Note: projects aimed at graduate recruitment should be directed to the Rackham Office of Graduate Student Success.
  • Special Financial Assistance for Graduate Students: Students who face unusual financial circumstances may apply for assistance through the Rackham Graduate Student Emergency Fund.

2. Enhance the Quality and Intensity of Intellectual Exchange

Academic initiatives to enhance the quality and intensity of intellectual exchange, particularly among faculty, and between faculty and graduate students.

  • Exploratory events attempting to comment critically on the present state of the field, or to map new academic territories;
  • Symposia or lecture series that are timely and interdisciplinary;
  • Single lectures that promise to hold broad interest for both faculty and graduate students; and
  • Projects to promote cooperation and designed to be of interest to faculty and graduate students across disciplines.

3. Events

Events benefiting the University community.

Application Instructions

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. They should take the form of a brief letter or message, specifying the need and appending a budget.

Faculty Travel

Please note that Rackham no longer provides support for faculty to attend conferences in order to concentrate resources on assisting student travel. Students interested in conference travel to present a poster or paper should apply to the Rackham Conference Travel Grant program.
