Join Rackham alumnus Dr. Tom Battle as he talks about his career as a consultant in the extractive metallurgy field. Dr. Battle will share insights about careers in consulting and industry. He received his Ph.D. from Rackham in Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, and has thirty years of experience in both research and practice in extractive metallurgy.

Feeling those graduate student purse strings tightening? Come join RSG for a Graduate Financial Workshop, focused on managing student finances, including student loans and credit. Kristin Bhaumik, Financial Aid Associate Director of Advising and Eligibility, will be presenting her tips and tricks on how to make the most cents out of your dollars (see what we did there?). This workshop will teach the fundamentals of restorative justice practices and how they can be used to resolve conflicts.

Join us for a slow, deep yoga flow specifically created for graduate students. CAPS MSW Intern and certified yoga instructor Valerie Maloof will lead an hour-long, breath-focused, energizing yoga practice focusing on releasing the tension that builds in our bodies from endless sitting and working on a computer. We will finish with a brief sitting meditation for long-lasting relaxation. All levels welcome.

The Brazilian Zouk Dance Club will teach people the fantastic Zouk dance of Brazil. No experience necessary! Brazilian Zouk is a social dance known for its beautiful flow, body rolls, off-axis turns, and excessive hair whips. There are so many styles of Zouk: meditation, hip-hop, aerial-infused, hugging, etc. This versatility allows people to have an opportunity to explore their creativity and self-expression.

Mindfulness is defined as “a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.” In this workshop, Erin Trame, staff of Mindfulness@UMich, will introduce the idea of Mindfulness and a few different practices, and then lead a 20 to 30 minute guided meditation.

Ph.D. Connections is a new, one-day career conference designed to support doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows in their exploration of career paths beyond academe. Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars will learn about non-faculty career opportunities through selecting from a series of eight panels with over 30 Ph.D.s working in diverse fields and workshops focused on career exploration and job search preparation.

The ceremony will feature the Dean of Rackham Graduate School, the University's Chief Diversity Officer, and student keynote speakers. A reception will immediately follow in the Assembly Hall.
While all Ph.D. students produce dissertations of quality, some students write dissertations that are truly exceptional for the high caliber of their scholarship and for the significance and interest of their findings. Each year we invite faculty to nominate the dissertations produced in their programs that were outstanding.
Rackham Graduate Exercises is the official commencement ceremony for all master’s and doctoral graduates and candidates who receive their degrees through the Rackham Graduate School. Held in Hill Auditorium, this program recognizes doctoral degree recipients individually and is formal in tone. Tickets are not required for general seating at Hill Auditorium.
