Register online for a Rackham Group Pre-Defense Meeting. You must register for the group pre-defense meeting at least 3 days before the meeting occurs. The pre-defense meeting you attend must occur at least 10 working days prior to the oral defense. At this meeting, the Rackham Dissertation and Abstract Format Guidelines will be reviewed along with the requirements for doctoral degree completion. You may wish to bring a copy of your Composition/Theory/Dissertation and abstract to mark any corrections or notes for your reference during this meeting. Please note that staff will not check each dissertation and/or abstract, however, there will be time allowed at the end of the meeting to address your concerns. Allow 90 minutes for group pre-defense meeting.
Music: Performance (A.Mus.D.)
Music: Conducting (A.Mus.D.)
At the pre-defense meeting, instead of a dissertation, the student must submit:
- one abstract
- at least two performance programs
The student receives from OARD:
- the final oral exam “packet” which they are to give immediately to their chair
- “pre-defense paperwork” folder with special agreement form for Proquest/UMI
At the post defense meeting the student submits:
- two abstracts
- one of their last performance programs (if not given at the pre-defense meeting).
- signed Report of the Final Oral Examination (remember to have the report signed retroactively-individual faculty dissertation evaluation forms are required to be returned with it) and the Certificate of Dissertation Committee Approval form.
Music: Composition (A.Mus.D.)
The composition is treated like a dissertation with pre- and post-defense meetings the same as other Ph.D. candidates.
The composition may have the following differences:
- the composition may be larger than 8 1/2 by 11 inches
- margin requirement is one inch on all sides
- title page needs to follow regular rules but may have different font
- may be printed on both sides of the paper with the exception of the front matter pages which must be single sided
Music: Composition and Music Theory (Ph.D.)
This is treated like a dissertation with pre- and post-defense meetings the same as other Ph.D. candidates.
The Composition volume may be different in the following ways:
- the composition may be larger than 8 1/2 by 11 inches
- margin requirement is one inch on all sides for composition
- title page needs to follow regular rules but may have different font
- may be printed on both sides of the paper with the exception of the front matter pages which must be single sided
Other differences:
- there should be a frontispiece in each volume that indicates that the dissertation is two volumes
- the Composition will be Volume I, the Theory will be Volume II. Volume I and Volume II should each have their own title page. There should also be one title page that does not have either Volume I or Volume II on it.
- the Theory volume should be exactly like a dissertation and follow the same guidelines as other Ph.D. candidates.
- the abstract should have the title of the Theory Volume

Music: Music Theory (Ph.D.)
