Understanding Registration and Related Policies

Ph.D. students are expected to register during each fall and winter semester from matriculation to degree completion, unless on an approved leave of absence or on Extramural Study status. If a student does not register for a term, he or she will be considered to have withdrawn and therefore, discontinued from the Ph.D. program.

Extramural Study Status

Effective Fall 2010, students who are in good academic standing who wish to pursue study that is relevant to the their University of Michigan Ph.D. at another education institution may apply for Extramural Study status. The course or program of study must be for a period that overlaps substantially (minimum seven weeks) with a University of Michigan fall or winter term. Students must seek authorization in advance for Extramural Study status, providing documentation regarding course or program details as well as documentation of enrollment. Extramural Study enables students approved for this status to remain active in their Ph.D. program.

Leave of Absence

Ph.D. students may request a leave of absence when certain life events prevent continued active participation in their degree program. Rackham’s Leave of Absence Policy enables students to officially suspend work toward their degree for a limited time.

Term Withdrawal

Ph.D. students are required to register in each fall and winter semester, unless on an approved leave of absence or on Extramural Study Status. Students are not required to register in the spring/summer semesters, unless they are taking a course, achieving a milestone, defending their dissertation, or completing degree requirements.

Reinstatement to a Ph.D. Program

Students who withdrew or were discontinued from a Ph.D. program may seek reinstatement to the same program. Students who withdrew or were discontinued who wish to apply to a different Ph.D. program complete the regular admissions application.
