Teaching RCR Certificate Program at the University of Illinois

Are you passionate about teaching? Are you engaged in thinking about research ethics? Would you like to create a course that teaches the responsible conduct of research at the U-M?

The Rackham Graduate School is seeking two Ph.D. students to participate in a graduate certification program in Teaching the Responsible Conduct of Research hosted by the National Center for Professional and Research Ethics (NCPRE; see www.csl.illinois.edu/ethics-center) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Upon completion students will receive a TRCR certificate. The first on-campus meeting at UIUC will be January 17-19, 2013.

Elements of the program include:
(a) an initial preparatory distance (telephone or online) work to lay groundwork
(b) an intensive two-day face-to-face workshop offered at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign focused on RCR content, pedagogy and assessment techniques
(c) participants will enroll in a two-part graduate course in two successive semesters, each carrying two graduate credit hours. These credit hours generate University of Illinois transcripts.
(d) during the first semester, participants will develop instructional events (workshops, seminars, courses or other approaches)
(e) through both semesters of the program, working groups will interact in areas of interest through online collaboration tools using Ethics CORE
(f) NCPRE faculty will consult with participants and provide feedback on developing projects through virtual and (possibly) additional face-to-face meetings
(g) participants will submit their materials for review and pilot their instructional activities at the University of Michigan
(h) participants will return to Illinois for a closing one- or two-day meeting reporting on their projects.

This program is targeted to candidate level Ph.D. students at least two years from graduation. Participation is free; Rackham will fund tuition, travel and expenses. For further information, contact Peter Hitchcock, Ph.D., Associate Dean, Rackham Graduate School (rackhamadbiohealthsci@umich.edu).
