Last week, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) announced this year's CIC/Smithsonian Institution Fellowship awardees. Kristine Ronan, a Ph.D. candidate in History of Art, also enrolled in Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program, was one of 6 students to be awarded this prestigious fellowship. Fellowships are offered by the CIC and the Smithsonian Institution to provide opportunities for graduate students to conduct research in association with members of the Smithsonian professional research staff, and to utilize the resources of the Institution. These one-year fellowships are offered through the Smithsonian's Office of Fellowships and Internships in partnership with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation in order to support research in residence at Smithsonian Institution facilities.

Kristine Ronan looks at identity formation through visual culture, focusing on American and Native American art from the 1830s through the 1970s. Her dissertation, “Buffalo Dancer: The Biography of an Image,” follows an 1834 work by exploration artist Karl Bodmer as it changes material forms and contexts across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Ms. Ronan’s additional research interests include the history and theory of film; modernism; museology; photography; print culture; and postcolonial theory.

Congratulations to Ms. Ronan!
