Who Really Makes the Difference?: Faculty Mentoring Awards

Pat McCune

How quickly can you name the teacher who made the most amazing difference in your education?  I’ll bet it’s as quickly as I can:  Prof. Mac Nelson, English Department, SUNY Fredonia. As a student, you know the people here at Michigan who make a difference. And you know the sorts of things they do that make them stand head and shoulders above their colleagues when it comes to really seeing you and your goals. They make themselves available; they give you honest advice; they help you identify the tools you need and develop the talents you have; they recognize that you have the potential to be a future colleague; they know that you may take an entirely different career path and they respect that.

Here at the Graduate School we recognize the importance of mentoring in your graduate experience and honor it with three different awards for faculty:

  • Rackham Distinguished Graduate Mentoring
  • Rackham Master’s Mentoring Award
  • D’Arms Faculty Awards for Distinguished Graduate Mentoring in the Humanities

Take a look at the full descriptions of each award for the details if you want to learn more.

I encourage you to tell your department chair, chair of your graduate program, or the grad coordinator in your department if you think there is a faculty member who deserves public acknowledgement for his/her contributions to graduate education through mentoring. Student opinion really matters when it comes to these awards, and they won’t know how much you value that special mentor unless you let someone know.

The recipients of these awards will be honored at a program on April 19 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Rackham Amphitheatre.

You’re welcome to give me a call at (734) 647-4559 if you have questions about any of these awards.
