What Is Arts of Citizenship?

What is Arts of Citizenship?

And What Opportunities Does It Offer for Graduate Students
in the Arts and Humanities?

I am delighted to have the opportunity to introduce the Arts of Citizenship Program to the graduate student community. Arts of Citizenship was founded in 1998 to promote public scholarship initiatives in the arts & humanities. With the support of Arts of Citizenship, U-M graduate students and faculty have carried out innovative scholarly projects in collaboration with arts and cultural organizations from Michigan to North Carolina to Ghana.

In 2010, with the support of Dean Janet A. Weiss, Arts of Citizenship became a Rackham-affiliated unit. Rackham is the ideal home for Arts of Citizenship given our commitment to providing opportunities for graduate students to learn about public scholarship, to participate in scholarly collaborations with community-based arts and culture organizations, and to explore alternative career and professional development opportunities both within and outside the academy. Our two-person staff—I am the faculty director and Elizabeth Werbe is our Program Manager—are eager to work with any and all graduate students interested in the practice of public engagement.

Arts of Citizenship promotes public scholarship through a grants program, public events, professional development workshops, graduate courses, and the Rackham Public Humanities Summer Institute. We have just issued a Request for Proposals for the 2012 Arts of Citizenship Grants Program which can be found on the Arts of Citizenship website  along with descriptions of projects that we have funded in previous years.

The grants program consists of two grant competitions:

  1.  Graduate Student Fellowships in Public Scholarship
  2.  Faculty-Graduate Student Collaborations in Public Scholarship

The grants application process begins with a 2-3 page Letter of Interest which is due by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 15.

Students and faculty interested in discussing project ideas or learning more about Arts of Citizenship offerings are encouraged to contact either myself or Elizabeth. You can also "Like" Arts of Citizenship on Facebook.
