What Does the Rackham Fellowships Office Do?

The Fellowships Office manages competitions for many Rackham fellowships, serves as a liaison for national fellowships and Foreign Exchanges, works with external foundations to arrange cost-sharing programs for students, provides funding to graduate programs for their students, and assists with summer research funding. The Fellowship Office also serves as liaison for many prestigious national fellowships including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Ford Foundation, Spencer Foundation, GEM, and Javits Fellowships.

Funding from Rackham ranges from specific dollar amounts to fully-funded fellowships; travel funds to present papers or posters at conferences; assistance with research expenses; and emergency funding for students who encounter an emergency situation or one-time, unusual, or unforeseen expenses during their graduate career. Guidelines and eligibility criteria for all Rackham funding is available on the Rackham website under “Funding.”

The Fellowships Office manages about two dozen different awards. Awards fall into four basic categories: direct funding to students; competitions for fellowship awards; allocations provided to graduate programs; and University and gift funds provided to programs for general student support.

A variety of informational resources are available on the Rackham Graduate School Fellowships Office website to help you navigate funding options.

If you have questions about funding, please contact the Rackham Graduate School Fellowships Office at 734-764-8119 or flwships@umich.edu. We’re here to help you!
