I can’t quite believe I’m doing this. I’m sharing a kind of secret spot.
But since I’m pretty obsessed with this place at the moment, I had to use it as my best of Ann Arbor post.
So where do you go in Ann Arbor for the best frozen treat?
Ben and Jerry’s? No…
Stucchi’s? No…
Where then, you ask?
Iorio’s.
Haven’t heard of it?
I’m not completely surprised.
It’s just off the beaten path enough that you might not know that this place even exists.
But once you do, I’m confident that it will become one of your go-tos.
For those who have been to Italy, I’ve been told that this gelato comes pretty close to the Italian version.
And it’s also appropriate since it’s summer, and it’s been quite a hot one.
My boyfriend and I have been frequenting this place.
On our last trip, we got called gelato whores. And I think we went almost every day one week, and after that, I cut us off.
But it’s easy to get carried away, because not only is the gelato amazing, but the flavors rotate. This can be annoying because they don’t always have flavors you love, but it gives you the built in opportunity to try something new, and experiment with multiple flavors.
I think my favorite flavor by far is the Turkish Roast. There are actual coffee grounds in the gelato. It is so good. But for the dairy-free folk, they also have an extensive selection of sorbets.
For those who are more traditional, they do have the chocolate and vanilla standbys. But they really shine on flavors that are bizarre/more obscure, such as basil sorbet, which is another favorite, and there’s blood orange, sangria, and green tea, to name a few others.
So if you want to experience a little bit of Italy right here in Ann Arbor, check out Iorio’s on William Street (near Asian Legend and Cottage Inn).
Something I’ve known for awhile is that you don’t have to stray that far off the beaten path to find hidden treasures.
On the outside, it’s very unassuming, and even the décor inside is minimalist. But the centerpiece is the gelato and it is well worth it.
I just hope that for me, with the secret that I have now shared, that the novelty won’t wear off once everyone knows about this place.

Maybe I’ll see you there sometime…we’re down to about once a week now…
