Introducing Myself

Mark Kamimura-Jimenez

Hello Rackham Students,

I first moved to Ann Arbor as a Ph.D. student in Higher Education and Public Policy 10 years ago this fall. I remember well, my journey to the Ph.D.; coursework, the qualifying exam, research projects, lack of sleep, learning how to churn out 30 page papers in my sleep, living on a budget, and answering every derivative of that dreaded question, “Are you finished?” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked that question! Needless to say, my graduation announcement was the answer to that question; it simply said, “DONE!”

So, with that, I’m here to help you get to DONE. Last month, I returned to U-M as the Director of Graduate Student Success for Rackham. In this new role, along with a great team, I’ll have the opportunity to develop programs to support academic and professional success, and enhance the quality of student life, of our highly diverse population of Master’s and Ph.D. students.

I am a native of Southern California. I have presented and published on issues of access, diversity and graduate education, including the book, The Latina/o Pathway to the Ph.D.. I have held leadership positions at Columbia University, UCLA and most recently was the Director for Educational Partnerships at Cal State Fullerton. I earned my B.A. from UC Irvine and M.A. from Columbia University.

I look forward to a great year and seeing you at one of the many programs offered by Graduate Student Success.

GO BLUE!

Mark
