Most awards have deadlines 6 to 12 months prior to the start of the academic year, so you are encouraged to get started on the application process early and apply for as many sources of funding as you can find. When considering applying for a fellowship or award, you will need to research the answers to the following questions:
General
- Do you meet the eligibility requirements and satisfy the selection criteria?
- What is the application procedure and deadline?
- What kind of funding does it provide?
- How long is the fellowship? Can it be renewed?
- How can the funds be used?
What’s Included?
- Does it provide a cost of living stipend?
- Does it cover tuition? And fees? Does it require someone else to pay your tuition?
- Does it provide funds for health and/or dental benefits?
- Does it provide funds for travel, conferences, or research?
- Does it provide support during the spring/summer term?
Requirements and Stipulations
- Does the fellowship require you to be registered?
- Are you required to work while receiving the fellowship?
- Can you have a different job while on the fellowship?
- Is there a limit on the hours you can work or other compensation you can receive?
- Would working hinder your academic progress toward completing your degree?
- How does accepting the fellowship impact other funding you already have?
Multiple Awards
- Can it be combined with other fellowships or awards?
- Can you accept more than one fellowship? Is there a limit? Can you defer or overlap fellowships?
- Can it be deferred or saved for a later point in time?
