Get Recognized: Outstanding GSI Awards

Do you ever get that feeling that other students are nominated for honors, awards and funding but you are always overlooked? Well, let me ask you this: when was the last time you thought about your role and responsibility when it comes to being nominated? That’s right—I’m suggesting that you think about how and when it’s appropriate for you to suggest to others that they nominate you for honors, awards and funding. This should only…

When You Need to Take Time Off: Leaves of Absence for Ph.D. Students

One of my roles at Rackham is serving as the Leave of Absence Coordinator. Ph.D. students are required to register each fall and winter term from the time that you begin your program until you complete your degree.** The exceptions to this requirement include times that you are approved for a leave of absence or you are taking courses at another institution. When you need to step away from being an active student for a…

Health and Wellness Resources from A(ctivities) to Z(en)

There are dozens of campus and community resources devoted to keeping you healthy as well as resources to help you when you are not feeling your best. There are many places to find support on campus, but we know that the size of the University can make these resources difficult to identify and locate. Rackham maintains a list of resources organized by topic area and provides a brief description and contact information for each resource. Even if you don’t think you might need these resources now, you may want to bookmark this site for easy reference when you do!

Introducing Myself

Hello Rackham Students, I first moved to Ann Arbor as a Ph.D. student in Higher Education and Public Policy 10 years ago this fall. I remember well, my journey to the Ph.D.; coursework, the qualifying exam, research projects, lack of sleep, learning how to churn out 30 page papers in my sleep, living on a budget, and answering every derivative of that dreaded question, “Are you finished?” If I had a dollar for every time…

As in most years, the University of Michigan is the only university in the nation in the top ten for the most doctorates awarded for every specified minority group. For Asian Americans, we ranked 6th. For African-Americans, we ranked 3rd. For Hispanics, we ranked 7th. And…

Rackham’s Planet Blue Efforts

The Rackham Building has received its annual Sustainability Report from Planet Blue. Compared to the weather-adjusted baseline (the baseline was established prior to June 2008), Rackham avoided $198,000 in energy costs in fiscal year 2011. Our FY2011 energy cost was $527,276.
