You will also get a form to map out your expenses so you can develop a plan for spending, bill-paying and saving. Mark Your Calendars: Summer Institute Symposium on August 7

The Rackham Summer Institute (SI) is wrapping up next week. The program began on June 14 and concludes with the Summer Institute Research Symposium on August 7 from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm here in the Rackham Building. Each year this Symposium provides the first opportunity for these new U-M graduate students to take part in a professional conference. Students will give both poster and oral presentations highlighting the research activity they pursued during the summer term. We are excited to see the start of the work that our new students will embark upon during their time here as graduate students. I hope you will join me in making their culminating activity for SI a positive professional experience.

Mark Your Calendars: SROP Symposium on July 25

The Summer Research Opportunity Program is coming to a close next week. An important part of the SROP experience for participants is to present their projects at the SROP Final Research Symposium held in the Rackham Building on July 25th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. This provides our graduate school community the opportunity to encourage the professional development of our SROP participants by joining in to hear about what they have achieved over the summer—and encourage them to pursue a graduate education at the University of Michigan! This is a wonderful recruiting opportunity for graduate programs and I encourage…

Rackham Summer Institute at U-M

2012 Rackham Summer Institute Participants This is my first year here in my role as director, and now I understand why people kept telling me that summer is the busiest time—and probably the most enjoyable. The staff in Graduate Student Success is responsible for two large summer programs, one for undergraduates and one for incoming graduate students, the Summer Institute. Known as SI to all involved, this program has been a fixture at Rackham during the summers since 1989. In the past enrollment was limited to about 50, but Dean Weiss decided it should be open to all eligible students…

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) at U-M

I am happy to say that Rackham’s 2012 Summer Research Opportunity Program is off to a running start. This year, we are hosting 53 outstanding undergraduate students from 47 different institutions. During the eight-week program, these students will work under the guidance of experienced faculty mentors along with graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, and other SROP students. In addition, they will engage in a series of academic, professional, and personal development seminars, and present their research at a concluding U-M research symposium. By the conclusion of the program, we anticipate that these exceptional students will have built professional and personal…

Call for Abstracts: 2012 Centennial Symposium

Would you like to highlight your research to the U-M community and beyond? A unique opportunity to do just that is coming up next semester! All Rackham graduate students are invited to present their research at the 2012 Centennial Symposium—a unique, multi-disciplinary forum to present current or ongoing research to peers, faculty, funding organizations, and the public. Posters and presentations should focus on students’ research and creative ideas that engage critical problems in their field of study, and be accessible to non-specialists from the University community. Abstracts will be selected to represent the breadth and diversity of Michigan’s graduate programs…

Introducing Myself

Hello Rackham Students, I first moved to Ann Arbor as a Ph.D. student in Higher Education and Public Policy 10 years ago this fall. I remember well, my journey to the Ph.D.; coursework, the qualifying exam, research projects, lack of sleep, learning how to churn out 30 page papers in my sleep, living on a budget, and answering every derivative of that dreaded question, “Are you finished?” If I had a dollar for every time I was asked that question! Needless to say, my graduation announcement was the answer to that question; it simply said, “DONE!” So, with that, I’m…
