University Graduate Exercises Ceremony and Reception

Graduates receiving master's or doctoral degrees through the Rackham Graduate School are invited to attend University Graduate Exercises (UGE). This formal ceremony celebrates and individually recognizes the achievements of the Graduate School's master's and doctoral recipients. The UGE will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Hill Auditorium. Tickets are not required for general seating at Hill Auditorium. Rosabeth Moss Kanter will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree and will deliver the commencement address at UGE. Dr. Kanter serves as the Ernest L. A Look Back at Grad School History

As we conclude our year-long Centennial celebration, we are making available on our website several articles that look back to the history of the Graduate School. The Bentley Historical Library houses The University of Michigan: An Encyclopedic Survey, a rich and detailed source for the history of U-M since its founding in 1817. Chapters on the Graduate School were published in 1953 and updated in 1977. Rackham will contribute another update in honor of the University's Bicentennial in 2017. $1 Million Gift Endows New Fellowship Fund

Rackham alumna Jiu-Hwa Lo Upshur received special recognition from President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan for establishing the Chia-Lun Lo Fellowship Fund at the Rackham Graduate School. In a ceremony at the Presidential Office in Taipei on May 24, President Ma praised Dr. Upshur for her $1,000,000 gift to endow the fund in memory of her father, an important figure in Taiwan’s government and academic circles. Rackham Dean Janet A. Weiss also attended and spoke briefly about the long history of graduate students from Taiwan who have attended the University of Michigan. Rackham Students Receive Centennial Fellowship Awards

Congratulations to the Rackham graduate students who have received the Centennial Spring/Summer Fellowship Awards! The pool of applications was large and very competitive with over 750 applications submitted. The recipients will use the funding to work on research, scholarly, or creative projects in collaboration with faculty mentors during the Spring/Summer 2012 term. The Centennial Fellowship Awards provide critical summer support to Rackham students whose work will have an impact on the world.

Announcing the 2012-13 Barbour Scholars

The Barbour Scholarships are among the oldest and most prestigious awards granted by the University of Michigan. Levi Lewis Barbour received an undergraduate degree and law degree from U-M in the 1860 s, and he later went on to become a University Regent. As a prominent lawyer and Detroit real estate developer, Mr. Barbour accumulated the means to become a philanthropist devoted to humanitarian and educational causes. Nearly 200 Rackham students will gather this Thursday, February 16, to participate in the Centennial Symposium: Michigan Graduate Students in the World. Poster and laptop presentations will fill the 2nd and 4th floors of the Rackham Building from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Symposium highlights the global impact that graduate students make through their research, and displays the quality, breadth, and diversity of graduate education at Michigan. To celebrate a century of support for Michigan’s graduate students, the Graduate School will provide special awards to be distributed in 2012.
