Congratulations to Our Graduates!

Commencement is almost here! On Friday, we will recognize those who’ve completed their Rackham graduate degrees at University Graduate Exercises at 11:00 am in Hill Auditorium, and again on Saturday at 10:00 am in Michigan Stadium. I invite you all to join in by sending your best wishes to our graduates, or give a shout out to those who are graduating with you, by sending a tweet with #rackhamgrads2013. The Future of Graduate Education: Moving into Our Second Century

Our celebration of the Graduate School’s Centennial over the course of 2012 brought fascinating speakers to talk with enthusiastic audiences, two glorious and provocative art exhibits, an incredible and lively student research symposium, summer funding opportunities, and returns to campus by nearly 100 Rackham graduates to talk about their careers and their scholarly work. These activities were lots of fun, intellectually gratifying, often inspirational, and prompted many of us to think about what the future may hold for graduate education. Congratulations from All of Us at Rackham

"Birth is a beginning, and death a destination; But life is a journey, a going - a growing from stage to stage." (Alvin Fine) On Friday April 27th at Hill Auditorium, we will celebrate the graduation of another 250 doctoral students and over 1100 master's students. Congratulations from all of us at Rackham to all of you who have reached this milestone on your own life's journey. I invite all of the graduates and their friends and family to a reception following the ceremony. It will be on the lawn of Ingalls Mall between the League and the Burton Tower following the conclusion of University Graduate Exercises.   We are proud of the extraordinary accomplishments of our graduates and look forward with great anticipation to the contributions all of them will make in scholarship, science, the professions, and the arts in coming years. Go blue!

U-M is the Leader in Launching the Careers of Outstanding Minority Ph.D. Recipients

On September 25, 2011 the Chronicle of Higher Education published a list of institutions that awarded the largest numbers of Ph.D. degrees to minority students between 2005 and 2009. As in most years, the University of Michigan is the only university in the nation in the top ten for the most doctorates awarded for every specified minority group. For Asian Americans, we ranked 6th. For African-Americans, we ranked 3rd. For Hispanics, we ranked 7th. And for American Indians, we were tied for 10th. For many years, Michigan has put a high priority on attracting a diverse community of graduate students,…
