The Interdisciplinary Nature of Higher Education

My friend in my program likes to make fun of me because I love throwing the term “meta” into daily conversations. I’ll admit I use it a lot more than the average person, but I don’t think it’s as big of an issue as she likes to make it seem! Unfortunately, Higher Education, my course of study, lends itself to a lot of things being described as “meta,” which makes my affection for the term worse than it would otherwise be. Higher Education earns the term “meta” because it encompasses all fields. Odds are that every single day, you benefit…

Fall Follies and Friends

Being a grad student is in a lot of ways an incredibly isolating experience. You learn to think on your own in the paradigms of your framework, whether that is in the context of research, or in applying what you learn in professional settings. A lot of the work that you do outside of courses is individually oriented, whether it is reading articles or writing papers. Fortunately, the culture of cohorts affords a lot of opportunities to meet people and allows you to overcome these systemic predispositions for solo work. From the moment you step on campus, you have the…

Postsecondary Education and Professional Development

Since this blog is being posted in October, my time here as a student is creeping to a close; I end my coursework in December. This is a really bittersweet realization for me since I have absolutely adored being a student for the past 17 or so years of my life. In fact, the process of getting an education was so impactful in college that I returned to get a Master’s so I could help others gain similar experiences. I am of course sad that I no longer will face the rigors of academia, but my life will become a…

Best Place to Study

School has just started; finally! That means a return to not only football season (my favorite!), my new graduate internship that I’ve been waiting patiently for, but also my purpose for being here… namely, courses. I’m incredibly excited about my courses this semester. The best thing about graduate school is that I finally get to study what I want to, but studying itself is never anyone’s idea of fun. However, the task becomes a lot easier when you find the right place to do it. I personally have always found it easier to study curled in a ball in my…

The Best Music Venue in Ann Arbor

I just finished my internship at a small, private liberal arts institution and although it was an incredible experience, I looked forward to returning to my two homes... moving into Ann Arbor again, and visiting New Jersey." One of the great things about working in higher education is the commonplace acceptance of multitasking. Often when I’m performing my duties as the Orientation intern this summer, I’ll put on music. However, since I’m using the desktop, I must rely on radio stations broadcast over the internet. This means that I end up listening to approximately 9 hours of pop radio a…

Meet Our Bloggers: Jackie Cohn

Hi there! Thanks for visiting my blog! My name is Jackie, and I’m starting my last semester of my program as a Master’s student in the Center for the Study of Higher and Postsecondary Education at Michigan. I am really excited to be able to share with you my experiences, hopes, and achievements over the course of this year. It’s definitely going to be a hard transition; I feel like I just got here, and now I have to begin finding a new home as I complete my degree and look for a job where I can apply the knowledge…
