Lots of Opportunity for Physical Activity

It's still not too late to register for many U-Move Fitness spring semester classes. The session will end on Friday, June 21. The summer session begins Thursday, June 27. You can register for those classes now too. Do you have children? We offer KidSport Summer Camp for kids ages 4-15. Remember how much fun you had in elementary gym classes? That's what the morning sessions are like. It's staffed by certified teachers as well as physical education and education majors. The afternoon session is more sport specific. Go to http://www.kines.umich.edu/programs/physical-education/our-programs to get more information on both programs. Enjoy your summer and remember to wear sunscreen!

Spring/Summer 2013 U-Move Fitness Classes

Get your dose of excitement and enthusiasm with exercise. Yes, that's what researchers at Penn State have found. It seems those who engage in regular exercise report higher levels of excitement and enthusiasm than those who exercise less. Additionally, for those who already engage in regular exercise, levels of excitement and enthusiasm are boosted when they push themselves even more. Looking to add some enthusiasm and excitement to your summer? Why not register for a U-Move Fitness class? Registration for spring and summer classes is now open. You can see more information at http://www.kines.umich.edu/umove/u-move-fitness.

Move to Improve

So much research supports the idea that moving your body improves brain function. One study with mice showed that those forced to run on a treadmill learned an avoidance task better than those running on their own on wheels. In another study with humans, those who did cardiovascular exercise performed better on a memory test than those who did strength training exercise. It seems the important message, though, is to just plain move your body. Not only does it benefit your muscles, bones, heart, sense of well-being, etc., it can improve how your brain functions. The School of Kinesiology's U-Move…

Your Brain is Hungry for Exercise

There is more and more research that supports the idea that exercise not only keeps your heart, lungs and muscles in tip top shape, but also helps your brain function better. Yes, your brain. It seems it’s not enough just to do jigsaw or the NY Times crossword puzzles. Our brains rely on glucose (blood sugar) and – more recently discovered – glycogen (carbohydrate), as energy sources. Glycogen, it turns out, is very important to our brain health. Glycogen provides needed energy to the brain during exercise and a lot is used up. Scientists experimented with rats to determine glycogen…
