Dale grew up in Kalamazoo. He earned both an M.A. in Public History from Western Michigan University and an M.U.P. from Michigan. His dissertation is titled "Building the Ivory Tower: University Development and the Politics of Urban Space." He uses campus planning as a lens to examine the role of American universities in urban development and the tensions between administrators, politicians, students, and communities, all of which are reflected in the built environment of universities. Dale plans on graduating in 2010.
