Andrew Chervenak

Andrew graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2005 with a B.S. in Biology. Currently, he is a Doctoral Candidate in Kate Barald’s lab as a member of the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Michigan. His dissertation research focuses on understanding how the Zic genes function to specify subsets of cells within the developing inner ear. Andrew plans to graduate in Fall 2012.

Anurag Tripathi

Anurag received his Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in India. After working as an Automotive Engineer for about two years, he commenced his doctoral studies in the University of Michigan with a research focus on BioMEMS and Microfluidics. He is working towards the development of a biochip using silicon microfabrication techniques for point-of-care monitoring of HIV/AIDS in resource-limited settings of the world. Anurag expects to graduate in Spring/Summer 2012.

Tamarie Macon

Tamarie completed her undergraduate work at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 2007, graduating with a B.S. in Public Health and a minor in English. She then pursued public service by working for a United States Senator for three years, focusing on health and education policy. Tamarie's research interests focus on the developmental trajectories of African American males, seeking to understand more about pathways of both resilience and psychopathology. For example, one project explored the role of masculine beliefs on later psychosocial adjustment, such as self-esteem and depression. She plans to complete her Ph.D. in 2015.

Beverly Shangkuan

Beverly received a Bachelor of Music from the University of the Philippines, and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the Yale School of Music and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. At Michigan, she works as assistant conductor of the School of Music Chamber Choir, University Choir, Women’s Glee Club, and as conductor of the RC Singers. She looks forward to returning to the Philippines after completing her studies in Michigan, where she plans to do community outreach through music, teach conducting, and have performance opportunities and collaborations with other art forms. She will complete the Doctor of Musical Arts at Michigan in April 2013.

Caroline VanSickle

Ph.D. Student in Anthropology

Caroline received her B.S. degree in Anthropology from Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS, in May 2007. She received her M.A. in Anthropology from the U-M in May 2010. Her focus is on the evolution of humans, within the sub-field of biological anthropology. Currently, she is planning her doctoral research on childbirth variation in recent human ancestors, which will involve examining the anatomy of the pelvis in both modern humans and fossil ancestors. Caroline plans to graduate in 2013.
