Application Fee Waivers and Grants

Common Requirements

The following requirements apply for all fee waivers and grants:

  • Requests are considered for Rackham graduate programs only. To verify that your program is a Rackham program, check the Programs of Study.
  • If your proposed program is a non-Rackham program, click non-Rackham Programs and contact the program directly to inquire about an application fee waiver.

One fee waiver or grant is allowed per applicant. Additional applications will require a fee.

Proof of program participation is submitted with your application.

If you pay the application fee and are approved to receive a fee waiver or grant at a later date, the fee will not be refunded.

Fee Waivers

If you are a member of one of the following organizations you must provide an official verification document from the organization before you apply. Do not mail, fax, or e-mail the proof of eligibility to the Rackham Graduate School unless requested to do so.

Fee Waivers Requiring Proof of Eligibility

For the following fee waivers, you will be required to provide proof of eligibility on the Additional Information Page of your application. These waivers are for U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only.

  • Committee on Institutional Cooperation – Summer Research Opportunity Programs (CIC )
  • Gates Millennium Scholars Program (GMS)
  • Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP)
  • Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC)
  • Post-Baccalaureate Research and Education Program (PREP)
  • Public Policy and International Affairs Junior Institute (PPIA)
  • Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE)
  • Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair)

Fee Waivers Requiring a Waiver Code

For the following fee waivers, you will be required to provide a fee waiver code on the Additional Information Page of your online application. If your request is approved, the organization will contact you with instructions.

  • College of Engineering – Ph.D. Program Waiver (requires pre-approval from the College of Engineering)
  • College of Engineering- Vietnam Education Foundation (requires pre-approval from the College of Engineering)
  • Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst
  • Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT)- (requires pre-approval from the IRT Organizations)
  • Latin American Scholarship Programs of American Universities
  • Master’s Bridge Programs – Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Applied Math and Applied Physics Waiver (requires pre-approval from the program)
  • Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) - Ph.D. Program Waiver– requires pre-approval from the program.
  • Public Policy M.P.P. or M.P.A. - Teach for America and Former Volunteer (Vista/Peace Corps/AmeriCorps) – U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents only.
  • School of Education (Secondary Master’s students only) Woodrow Wilson
  • U-M Exchange Program – University of Freiburg in Germany and University of Seville in Spain

Rackham Need Based Fee Grant

To be eligible for a Rackham Need Based Fee Grant you must be:

  • A U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States (with a registration number).
  • An undergraduate College Senior receiving financial aid at an institution in the United States, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.
  • Classified as a dependent with a parental contribution of not more than $900.00 and no personal contribution during the senior year or classified as self supporting with a personal contribution of not more than $1,200 during the senior year and received no parental funds.

Applying for the Rackham Need Based Fee Grant

  1. Apply at least 10 business days before you submit your application to avoid delays in receiving a response to your request.
  2. Complete the top section of the Rackham Need Based Fee Grant form.
  3. Send the form to your Undergraduate Financial Aid Office.
  4. Your Financial Aid Office completes the bottom section of the form and faxes the form to Rackham for review.
  5. A Rackham Need Based Fee Grant requires preapproval from Rackham. You will be required to provide a fee waiver code with the submission of the application.
  6. Allow 8 business days for Rackham to respond to your request.
  7. Rackham will review the official documents and contact applicants by e-mail.
  8. The e-mail will include notice of the final decision.
  9. If approved, you will receive a code to enter into the online application. The code is required to submit the application.
  10. If denied, payment by credit card is required to submit the online application.

Current Volunteer Fee Grant

Consideration for a fee grant based upon the status as a current volunteer is a two step process:

Step 1: Prepare Your Request

Request a letter of verification at least 10 business days before you start the application.

  • Provide an official document signed by the immediate supervisor verifying the applicant’s financial status as a current Vista/Peace Corps or AmeriCorps volunteer.
  • The document must also include the applicant’s name, dates of service, e-mail and telephone number.

Step 2: Fax Your Request

This information should be faxed to 734-647-9378, Rackham Graduate School.

Step 3: Final Decision

Allow 8 business days for Rackham to respond to your request.

  • Rackham will review the official documents.
  • Rackham will contact applicants by e-mail including the notice of the final decision.
  • If approved, you will receive a code to enter into the online application. The code is required to submit the application.
  • If denied, payment by credit card is required to submit the online application.
