Associate Dean Abigail J. Stewart
Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Initiatives
Sandra Schwartz Tangri Distinguished University Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and Director of the ADVANCE program at the University of Michigan.
Dean Stewart is the primary liaison between the Graduate School and the Social and Behavioral Sciences. She works closely with these graduate programs on all matters that influence the quality of graduate education. Issues of interest include strategic planning, student recruitment, program visibility, resource allocation, student fellowships and awards, cross-disciplinary partnerships, and climate and culture as they affect graduate students.
Dean Stewart's specific responsibilities are to:
- Assess academic graduate programs and allocate resources, including those for graduate student support in Division III (Social and Behavioral Sciences)
- Coordinate all Graduate School activities in Division III
- Develop and support active recruitment efforts, particularly for students from underrepresented groups.
- Help lead the NSF/AGEP/SBE project. The Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) supports the University of Michigan AGEP Postdoctoral Fellowship.
- Serve as a contact for Rackham on campus and nationally
- Work with graduate programs to promote good practices in graduate education and achieve student retention.
